Ever have that "I'm stuffed but I'm still hungry feeling?"
Kinda like how I felt after eating a gianormous plate of BBQ at a friend's house last week, swearing I couldn't fit in "one more thing" and then, ten minutes later, waltzing back over to the dessert table searching for some of those butter cookies.
If feeling like you want "just a little" more even though you've eaten a lot makes you feel just a little bit anxious, I hear you!
{And if hearing your daughter ask for dessert after enjoying three huge bowls of mac N' cheese also makes you feel little like "wha?", I hear you on that front too! Oh, I!}
It might feel unsettling yet it doesn't need to be!
Once you understand the difference between hunger and appetite, it's normal and makes perfect sense!
I'm gonna give you a quick, down and dirty explanation in this email so you can feel more comfortable with the "still hungry" after eating feeling.
Many of us (maybe ALL of us! definitely the "live to eat" ones of us) need to get both our HUNGER and our APPETITE fulfilled in order to be done, so to speak, with eating.
That's why you can feel physically stuff (hunger is no longer there) but still kinda want something.
This is a KEY reason it's important to include something enjoyable with meals.
And this explains why a kid who has filled up--and then some--on dinner foods still has room for dessert.
And, why after eating an entire diet-dinner entree and four bowls of salad (me in my dieting days!), we can still be scrounging around in the freezer for some leftover birthday cake.
If you or your daughter's "I'm still hungry even though I'm full" feeling is a problem, start getting curious.
Were the first foods delicious? Or merely filling? How much does she (or do you) need to enjoy food to feel satisfied?
(You'll notice some kids just need to eat to get by while others get a whole lot more satisfaction from eating. Which one is yours? Which one are you?)
We talk about all this and more in NourishHer's Positive Food Parenting Program. You can also go even deeper and get some hands-on learning in course. {In fact, I'm tackling this topic in the email because I was looking over some feedback forms and noticed multiple moms mentioned this was one of their favorite lessons!}
Got a question? Send it over! I'm here for you!
Double Love,
Hello, again! Guess what I've been two for the past ten months for seven hours a day, three days a week? Talking to tweens and teens about.... eating! (And body image because, well, body image has a huge impact on our kids' eating. So that just comes up over and over and over.) Why am I doing all this talking? Because I started back working at the medical center here in New York a few days a week and I'm stationed smack dab in adolescent medicine. (My perfect place, of course!) Talking to...
Do you have one of those Buy, Sell, Giveaway Facebook groups for your community? (Love these!) If not, I highly recommend it! (Find and join now!) I'm constantly posting on our local board as a way to clear the neverending clutter that comes along with childrearing--and it feels good! I've also been known to put out an ISO post on there when I need something too. Most recently I posted asking if anyone had any houseplants they were looking to rehome. 🪴 Because, well, my husband forbids me to...
Here's some #realtalk for y'all! This post took me months to write! (And not in a good way... more like a this.feels.so.hard.I'm.gonna.keep.procrastinating.about.it kinda way!) What made it so tough? Well, at one point in my book research, I handed my daughter a graphic novel to read without realizing that it just happened to be all about eating disorders. (Oops!) If that sounds intriguing, scary, or both, you can read more about it and other issues I encountered in writing this up about...
